Much of my work begins with an interest in the spaces we occupy and our relationship with the world around us. I am drawn to moments of solitude and uncertainty, when the familiar gives way to contemplation and the possibility of something beyond it.
The solitary figure often appears in my work, standing at the edge of an architectural form or occupying a seemingly precarious position. I am drawn to the profound stillness of these moments.
My practice extends across sculpture, drawing and material experimentation, informed by architecture, the natural world and the passage of time. Working with concrete, steel, bronze and other materials, I explore the contrast between precise construction and the forces that resist our attempts to impose order.
Underlying my work is a fascination with the space between control and freedom, and what might emerge when the boundaries between them begin to dissolve.
Biography
Steven Pollock is a Canadian artist based in Vancouver, British Columbia, whose multidisciplinary practice spans sculpture, concrete relief, drawing and sculptural furniture.
Largely self-taught, Pollock began his artistic career creating functional objects influenced by architecture and monumental infrastructure. His practice has since expanded into a diverse body of work, combining an unconventional approach to materials with an exploration of the relationship between humanity and its surroundings.
Pollock was named Western Living's Furniture Designer of the Year in 2016 and received the Carter Wosk Award in Applied Art & Design at the 2017 BC Creative Achievement Awards. His work has been featured in publications including Azure, Gray and The Globe and Mail.

Steven Pollock undertakes selected commissions for private collectors, architects and designers, including sculptural furniture, site-specific sculpture and architectural installations.
